The Florida heat can play a large role in how a Florida home’s roof is affected relating to longevity. Observing the effect of heat on Florida roofs can affect the age of roofs.

Although The Sunshine State has great weather for outdoor activities and backyard recreation, the extremely hot weather conditions at times create challenging conditions for the local roofs.

Being a prominent roofing company in the Jacksonville and Longwood, FL area, J&M Roofing Services Inc. has done extensive research and studied in detail how the Florida heat affects roofs.

Let’s have a look at the major effects of heat on Florida roofs, and the possible solution.

A bright sun shines in a golden, hazy sky above the terracotta tiled roof of a house.

High Average Temperature

High temperature can negatively affect the overall life of the roof system material. Major fluctuations in temperatures like spikes, local roofs constantly undergo damage & they affect a roof. Basically whenever the heat increases the roof structures expand and when the temperature falls, they immediately shrink. This can cause issues to arise with the constant change.

This immediate movement of structural components results in damage and weakening of the roof. It is due to this reason, holes, and cracks in roofs of Florida are common.

Ultraviolet radiation

That is why Florida has nicknamed the sunshine state because of the hot weather conditions in this great state. The fact is the sun is always at its peak and the piercing rays of the sun constantly keep on damaging the structural component of the roofs.

On one side the color of the roots fades quickly as expected while on the other side the average life expectancy of the roof is also considerably decreased.

Although some people, especially homeowners and building owners, consider the application of various ultraviolet protective coatings, this is not a 100% effective solution, because the adverse effects of heat remain there.

Excessive moisture in the air

Very hot temperature in Florida is accompanied by excessive amounts of rain and fast winds. This uncertainty of the weather condition results in weakening of the roof structures, mold formation, roof devastation as well as fungal infections.

The excessive moisture penetrates the structural components of the roofs and destroys the beauty entirely. This condition also results in the condensation beneath the shingles as well as water leaks.

Asphalt shingles particularly observe erosion and peeling and are at a higher risk of structural damage.
